Outlast® NBS 30® is a botanical insect repellent additive from CTA Products Group. Stirred into the final coat of an exterior oil- or water-based finish, it deters insects from crawling on, nesting in, or burrowing through the treated surface.

It works from five time-release botanical oils — citronella, cedarwood, rosemary, eugenol and lemongrass — all on the GRAS list.

This is a repellent, not an insecticide

The manufacturer states plainly that NBS 30 is not an insecticide. It deters insects; it does not kill them. It is also not suitable for termite control. For termites and wood-decay fungi, use a borate treatment such as Tim-bor Professional on bare wood instead.

How to use it

  • Mix 3.2 fl oz per gallon of coating, or empty a full pint into a 5-gallon bucket. One pint treats up to 5 gallons.
  • Add it to the final coat only.
  • Apply by brush, roller or spray as you normally would.
  • Reapply as needed.

Two things to expect

  • The odor is strong at first. It fades within a few days.
  • It reduces sheen. A high-gloss coating drops to roughly semi-gloss once NBS 30 is added. Plan for that if gloss level matters to you.

What it deters

Per the manufacturer: carpenter ants, bees, ladybugs, and general nuisance crawling and nesting insects.

  • Toxic to fish. Keep away from waterways.
  • Harmful if swallowed. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
  • Wear protective eyewear and chemical-resistant gloves when handling the concentrate.
